The nature of the somewhat indistinct plants suggests their transience, anticipating the fall and winter.
Next to Baliles we see its opposite, a patently exact portrayal of a “Kulich-Russian Easter Cake”, oil on panel, painted by Robin Purnell. One can almost stick a finger into the cake’s frosting and blow out the candle that surmounts it. This is a symmetrical composition indicating its relation to hierarchy, the serious and ceremonial nature of the Russian Orthodox Church, here gaily rendered.
June Jordan’s “Home Canning” is much more than that because as she often does, she brings the garden outside a window into the scene where bottles of beets, tomatoes, and peaches stand on a ledge. She has even painted two chickens feeding among a bright array of flowers. This is a strong, original picture.
