When I delight in an exhibition, as I did viewing the current member’s show at the Middle Street Gallery, feeling it superior to exhibits I see when I travel away and look at what other communities have to offer, I ask myself if I’m prejudiced. Is my appreciation of our artists warped because I know them and have had an opportunity to study their work over time? Do my feelings for them as friends or acquaintances lead me to believe they are more outstanding than thoughtful strangers would find them? I’m doubtful I can ever resolve my concerns to be helpfully objective.
The pictures showing this month called “Full Plate: Food for the Eye”, perked me up with their beauty and variety. Carol Baliles large water color, “Food at Harvest 1999”, in an attractive gold frame, depicts a bright sun-bleached garden of blurred subjects.
