I was ready to write itiy news article this week, when | received a phone call that our' good friend and bus driver for all my school years had gone to rest.

It really saddened me because he was so kind to me and all who rode the school bus. I’m thankful for the many good memories I shall always have.

Clyde Atkins, better known as “Mutt” died in his sleep on Sunday, July 22 at the Warrenton Overlook Health Center. He celebrated his 93rd birthday just last Sunday.

He got his nickname when he was not old enough to play baseball, but was watching them practice, and someone called “Hey, you little Mutt”, and thus the nickname. So, it was Mutt for the rest of his life.

He started driving the school bus in 1929 and continued until 1974 when he retired, a total of 44 years. He watched all of us grow up, and transported two generations of families to and from school. He was always concerned about all of those who rode the bus and remembered and asked about all of us.

When Mutt started driving the school bus, he substituted as needed for his brother, James. He had a contract with the school board and the first bus was a homemade body with a tent for a roof. After a few years a more modem bus appeared. James and Mutt furnished the chassis and the
