Alone

When people recall their happiest memories, they usually think of times when they were surrounded by friends or family or when they felt an intimate connection with another person. Unfortunately, as individuals age, such moments may be increasingly hard to come by. And, many older adults find themselves feeling lonely and isolated due to the death of loved ones. Living alone does not have to mean being lonely, however. Loneliness is a perceived deficit in either the quantity or quality of one’s social relationships.Conversely, some with relatively few social contacts are not necessarily lonely. Overcoming loneliness requires determination and the knowledge that making a connection with others will most likely happen if you put yourself out. Sometimes, especially during a time of bereavement, loneliness just has to be experienced as a part of the grieving process.
