At its first meeting. Chairwoman Beverly J. Sherwood (R-Winchester) said the only order of business for the day involved the formation of two subcommittees, one to deal with firearms and one to deal with public-safety bills.

“It is a new challenge,” Sherwood said of her new leadership assignment.

On the first day of the 2002 General Assembly, House Speaker Vance Wilkins, R-Amherst, sent 30 different bills, many concerning terrorism prevention and public safety, to the committee.
