It's that time of the year when students of Rappahannock County Middle and High School are busy putting the finishing touches on their science projects. These projects can be viewed at the Rappahannock Science Fair, which will be held on Jan. 24 and 25. The students are excited about explaining to the public their experiments and projects. You can visit them from 3:30-7 p.m. on Jan. 24.
Students at the Middle School include Jonathan Butler on Does the material that a seed is planted in effect its growth?; J.R. Barron, Does a boat’s hull shape effect its speed?; Hannah Gall, Does elevation effect temperature?; Kelly Jenkins, Can water effect the softness of hair?; Katie Long, The effect of acid rain on plant growth; Shawn Porter, Can soft drinks remove rust from nails? and Noel Johns, Does temperature effect the bounce of a basketball?
Eighth graders exhibiting include Sammy Bridgemann, Leaving rubber bands in sun and then testing strength; Ashleigh Hawkins, Testing the speed of wind at the top and bottom of a hill; James Orange, Tie different weights on the ends of fishing wire and which would cut through ice the fastest; Jamie Dwyer, Set up dominoes in different spacing and how long it took them to fall; Lee Brandon, Effective fertilizer on plant growth; Caity Waites, Green hair galore; Rocio Loya, Effective temperature on decaying fruit; Kevin Stickle.Test the pH of local ponds, comparison of those that allow cows and ones that don’t.
