Sometimes it is sold by the “truck load”. This you have to be wary of because you may be surprised by the amount you get. Either a whole lot more or a whole lot less.
You should buy “seasoned” wood so it will burn properly. Seasoning is what occurs after the wood is cut and allowed to dry. This takes several months and the wrood will burn longer and better.
Some wood will season fast. You can tell by the color if it is seasoned, and it should have a hollow ring if struck against a hard surface. It will feel light in weight and be dry. Keeping in mind, dampness from rain is alright.
Wood that is not “seasoned” is greenish, feels heavy and will be damp on the ends. If it has been cut too long it will show it has begun to rot. If it is soft and you can poke through it, it is no good. Another sign of rotten wood is a white mildew ring called “sap rot”.
Oak is the best wood for burning. Hickory and locust aren’t bad, but pine should be avoided because its resin causes creosote buildup in the chimney.
