Volleyball
The Volleyball teams squared off here at home against the Lady Rams from Strasburg on Wednesday, Jan. 9. The game was a battle between the two second place teams in the District, as each had suffered one lose to date. It was an exciting contest as both squads know the winner would be alone in second.
Both games were fiercely contested and went down to the wire. In both cases the Lady Panthers were behind late in the match as the Lady Rams tried to pressure the home team into folding, but the Rapp girl’s refused to buckle. Instead they fought back in each game and squeezed the Strasburg squad in their own pressure cooker.
When the steam cleared, the Lady Panthers were victorious in both games and swept the Strasburg side out of the gym with a pair of 15 to 13 victories. In the first game, junior Rachel Sharp and sophomores Lindsay Niell-Dore and Ryisha Gook were 100 percent in the serving department and sopho. more Danielle Hiserman contributed four aces.
In the second game, serve percentages were down to 76 percent, but the team did what needed to be done to get the victory. Afterwards, Coach Zylonis said, "We were tied for second with Strasburg going into this contest, and to get on top we had to win. With strong serving, few errors, and good coverage, I expect we'll continue to play at this level.”
The JV team couldn’t keep pace with their older sisters and lost in the opening contest two games to one (11-15, 16-14, 7-15).
Two nights later, the Volleyball Teams traveled to Brentsville District High School on Friday, Jan. 11. The Lady Tigers probably wished the Lady Panthers’ bus had gotten lost, because when the Rapp teams got there the games were over before either team could work up a good sweat. The JV Panthers set the JV Lady Tigers down tw'o games to none with a 15 to 10 and 15 to 6 performance.
Less than an hour later, all the Lady Panthers were getting back on the bus after the Varsity team duplicated the JV’s two game shutout with a pair of 15 to 11 and 15 to 6 victories. Head Coach Zylonis called it a case of “...taking care of business.”
