Mrs. Lois Snead has just returned from her fifth adventure in a small town in Slovakia | called Nesvady which is right on ? the Hungarian border. From the £ way she speaks of her host famrily,
the people in the town, the work she went there to do, and especially the children, it is evident that she will return again 'next year. if Joining Mrs. Snead on this year’s adventure were Rev. Phillip and Karyl Bailey, Deborah Flinchum and Susan Payne, both first grade teachers / in the elementary school, and f|Bob and Sonita Brown from !* Fredericksburg.
They are returning from Itwo weeks of English School I where their mission was to I teach English to elementary I aged children. Mrs. Snead and § her husband, Judge Raynor I Snead, were among the pioneers at the first English School five years ago.
The two-week school is sponsored by the YMCA whose mission is “improving the lot of youth.” The program began with members of the Nesvady Baptist Church who were also I members of the YMCA. The Washington Baptist Church and the Sneads got into the picture when they saw Slovakia on a list of mission projects put together by the Virginia Baptist Association. They’ve been heading to Slovakia ever since.
Slovakia is part of what was Czechoslovakia. Twelve years ago with the end of Russian rule, Czechoslovakia became two countries: the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Slovakia was and still is the rural area of Czechoslovakia with industry centered in the Czech Republic. Slovakia is still struggling.
But Mrs. Snead has seen great improvements over the five years she’s been coming to the region. The roads are better. Every house in Nesvady has some four or five greenhouses
