A recent study by the Piedmont Environmental Council (PEC) notes 33 new or proposed power plants are to be built in Virginia. The report states, “In 2001, Virginian’s were using a maximum of 19,000 megawatts on peak energy usage days (such as hot days in the summer). Current power plant proposals for over 20,000 (new) megawatts are to be online by 2005, effectively doubling the amount of energy generated in Virginia and creating a drastic over-supply in the state. While this excess energy will be exported to other states, Virginia will feel pollution and other effects of these massive industrial facilities.” By 2004, Virginia could be furnishing over 30 percent of the entire national demand for electricity.
