At a meeting on July 29, the School Board voted to retain the Virginia School Boards Association (VSBA) to assist in the superintendent search, and the search process has already begun.
The Board was briefed on the VSBA approach to conducting and managing the search by Executive Director Frank Barham and by Assistant Executive Director Gina Patterson.
The VSBA process entails seven discrete tasks: an initial meeting with the School Board; the development of a profile for the new superintendent; monitoring of the search process by VSBA; screening of the candidates; a final report on candidates to the School Board; the preparation of interview instruments; and continuing consulting services by VSBA during the search and evaluation process.
The VSBA will receive $5,000 plus a maximum of $500 in expenses for their services, and they estimate that the School Board will spend another $6500 to $9500 to complete the search and hiring process.
The major milestones in the process are: a public announcement of the timeline (and this constitutes that announcement); Aug. 27 as the deadline for return of surveys on desired superintendent qualifications to be sent to County residents, school staff, and students’ parents; Aug. 27 for a public hearing on desired qualifications; Sept. 15 through Oct. 15 for receipt of applications; November and December of this year for conducting interviews; and the announcement of a selection in November or December of 2002.
New staff
The School Board agreed to contracts on July 29 for seven new employees, and Assistant Superintendent Jack Raines announced that five positions remain open for the coming year.
Hired were: Charles Wright (RCHS English); Judy O’Harrow (French); Lorien Onderdonk (Business); Darlene Gallo (RCHS English); Pamela Chovnick (Spanish); Steve Burton (Mathematics); and Roy Pullen (RCES Janitor).
