In this area, we are lucky in having thick soil and elements of neutralizing bedrock, a little basalt in the Park (very good) and much granite (not as bad as siliciclastic ). The basalt acts on sulfuric acid and nitric acid as Turns acts on stomach acid: it neutralizes the acid.

Clevenger’s Corner has some greenstone, another Tums-like bedrock. The concern is that there is just so much sulfuric and nitric acid that can be absorbed by soil before saturation points are hit. The soils in the Park have already reached 70 percent of their acid limit for sulfur coming from sulfuric acid in rain.

The Shenandoah National Park has recently noted indications (nothing proven, yet) that acid rain might again be on the upswing, caused by an increase in coal-fired power plants in South Carolina. North Carolina, and Virginia. And, if such power plants use low-sulfur coal, mercury emissions increase. In April 2002. certain counties in Michigan reported levels of mercury 11 times higher than considered safe by the EPA for surface water, due to such emissions.

In May 2002, southwest Detroit reported levels 20 times higher than considered safe. Michigan fishing licenses now come with warnings to anglers to restrict their consumption of fish due to mercury contamination.
