The brand new yellow school bus may have saved the day in Chester Gap, at least foi a while.
The school age population had grown so large in Chester Gap that last year the three busses running up there were beyond packed. For awhile it seemed like the purchase of a fourth bus running up the narrow mountain roads was the only solution. In addition to those four busses, the handicapped access bus would be on those roads picking up children. All five of them in and out of the fog on those steep winding roads? Not a good solution.
Dr. David Gangel, former Superintendent of Schools, had heard of a really big bus and asked Jack Raines, Assistant Superintendent and Transportation Director to check it out.
The big bus checked out. For $69,779 the county purchased a bus which could do it all. The bus which looks enormous is only 13 inches longer than the old bus, but can carry far more children. Not only will there not be more busses heading up to Chester Gap — there will be fewer.
The big yellow bus will run to the top. The second bus will run only part way, pickup children and then circle around the store and fire hall and head back down. The handicapped
