since their honeymoon in New England some 55 years ago. These pieces, coupled with family heirlooms on both sides, provide the home with character and interest, as do the eclectic collections of crows and monkeys.
Outside, brick patios, stone walls fashioned from the stones from the old foundations, and an old boxwood allee contribute to the charm and dignity of this very historical home.
The second home of the tour is the Middleton Inn, an 1850 Federal style brick manor house, which is listed on the Virginia Landmarks Register. Middleton Inn sits on six acres at the west end of the town of Washington, surrounded by its own horse pastures and the distant views of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
Originally, the home was built and owned by Middleton Miller, who manufactured uniforms for; the Confederate side in the Civil War. Its outbuildings include the original smokehouse, summer kitchen and slaves’ quarters; the latter is now a charming two-story cottage available to guests.
The Inn is now a deluxe bed and breakfast, owned by journalist Mary Ann Kuhn since 1995. Under her ownership Middleton Inn has prospered, receiving numerous awards.
