STRUGGLING WITH BELIEFS
There is research that indicates that elderly people who are struggling with religious beliefs while suffering from illness are more at risk of dying. It is thought that individuals who voice religious dissatisfaction and discontent in the midst of their illnesses may alienate themselves from the care and support of family, friends, clergy and health professionals. This, in turn, may result in a loss of social, emotional, and tangible support. All this points out the fact that, while religious belief and conviction can be a source of comfort and strength to those living out their final days, the converse is also true. To be alienated from firm belief may loosen one’s grip on life, making it easier to leave it.
