4 by 4 block scheduling at RCHS
The approach to remediation is about to undergo significant change too at the high school. The new 4x4 block scheduling will enable teachers to remediate “as soon as we know that there is a problem,” Superintendent Williams said. Under the 4x4 approach, a student will have one course for each of four periods per day, and. will complete what was a full year’s coursework in a single semester. If a student fails an SOL test in January, they will receive remedial assistance and can retake the test at the end of the school year.
Mrs. Williams also noted that concerns by band members, their parents and by band boosters about the impact of 4x4 scheduling have been addressed by new RCHS Principal Roger Mello. Band has been fitted into the block scheduling schema, and it will continue through the year by sharing a period with another elective.
Teacher morale
Superintendent Williams has set teacher morale as her top priority. She said “Teachers need to be shown that they have our respect and admiration. My goal is to do so . . . that’s what I have to show them.”
Mrs. Williams explained that she feels extremely close to the teaching staff and that she realized, in the nine months of retirement before returning as Interim Superintendent, that she herself was just that—she was a teacher. She had dedicated her career to teaching, she said, and though her most recent assignments were in administration, she was still and foremost a teacher.
