The interior of this gracious house features a wide center hall and high ceilings. In the common areas, * antiques and fine fabrics have been woven together to provide spaces both elegant and comfortable. An elegant staircase leads to four bedrooms for guests on the second floor. All are furnished with marble baths, woodburning fireplaces, and all continue the sophisticated style of the downstairs.
All through the house, paintings, sculptures, and other artifacts remind visitors of the rural and equestrian history of the area, featuring horse portraits, racing scenes, foxhounds, fox hunting, botanical prints, and Blue Ridge landscapes. Notable is an Oliphant bronze on the first floor, of a horseshoe playing President George Bush, which was formerly in the National Portrait Gallery.
The Middleton Inn has been the teahouse for the tour for several years, but this year all its rooms will be open to the public for viewing. Tea will again be served here on both days of the tour.
Outside the town, in Tiger Valley, the contemporary home of Mike and Bette Mahoney, completes the list of the three tour houses. “Stoneledge” is nestled high above the road and anchored to the rock ledge that gives it its name. It was built about 25 years ago from the stones of Estes Mill, which was operating in Sperryville in the early 1800’s. Stonewalls, huge outcroppings of
