Some of the raffle money plus kind donations by individuals was used to defray the expenses of the annual summer camp, while the majority went into a fund to build cross-country fences for the Club’s use.
Once again thanks go to Freddie Kummli who has donated the use ot his land for this project and the jump building project is currently underway. Three-Day Event Olympic medalist, Nina Fout has generously designed the course which will have 25 fences suitable for horses and riders of three different Pony Club levels when completed.
Bi-weekly lessons took place at the beautiful ring at Semmes’ Indian Run Farm during April, May and the beginning of June. June 15 saw the start of the two week summer camp held at Forbush’s Foxhall Farm with some horses stabled at Kummli’s Windsor Lodge. (Again, all facilities were donated.)
Nearly 25 riders attended and had a marvelous time while seriously improving their practical and theoretical knowledge of riding and horse management. There were daily trips to either the Semmes’ or the Mike Massie family’s pool, a field trip to Zohar ben Dove’s incredible gorgeous race horse facility in Middleburg and on the very hot afternoons, sojourns to the air conditioned Flint Hill Fire House for an art project, drill ride practice on foot and a movie.
Kate Moulding, a visiting Pony Club instructor from Massachusetts, and local instructors Sarah Kuehn and Pavla Laurenczen shared teaching duties which included dressage and stadium jumping in the ring, cross country jumping over parts of the new course, trail riding, swimming the horses in the Jordan River, bareback and drill team work and games.
Guest lectures by farm manager Jane Naramore, horse dentist Ken Pankow, and veterinarians John Nolan, Joyce Harmen and Scott Dove covered topics from forage suitability to Lyme Disease to Pony Club Tetrathalon.
