where peppers, cucumbers, tomatoes and other vegetables are grown. Almost all of the homes have chickens in the yard and some have pigs.
This year one of the biggest improvements for the teachers and the children was the change in teaching facilities. Nesvady has two schools, the Hungarian school and the Slovak school (both of which only cover the grade school ages). This year for the first time the YMCA was able to rent the Slovak school for their, program. Some windows were broken and there were cracks in the floors with rug remnants covering them, but essentially a vast improvement over past years at the Hungarian school.
Enrollment in English school has also grown over the five years. When she and Judge Snead made their first trip, there were three classes and about 60 children from Nesvady and surrounding towns. For this trip there were four classes and over 90 children signing up. Class sizes were supposed to be limited to 24 and the teachers had brought only enough materials and supplies for that number. All of the teachers had to do some creative scrambling to find materials in Nesvady for the additional children.
The popularity of the school program has grown in part because English is the language of business and there is a great desire to learn. It is also apparent from the way Mrs. Snead speaks that the children keep coming in increasing numbers because they are having a great deal of tun while learning.
School started at 8:30 every day with English lessons filling the morning. Recreational and educational games continued until 4 p.m. Mrs. Snead assigned no homework except daily Bible verses in English to memorize for the following day.
