Long View Gallery in Sperryville will feature an intriguing exhibit by two outstanding Virginia artists, William H. Whiting and Don Black from Aug. 22 through Sept. 18. The exhibit explores how local landscapes inspire the creative spirit to produce dramatically different paintings. There will be a reception for the artists featuring refreshments and live jazz on Saturday, Aug. 24 from 4 to 7 p.m.
William H. Whiting paints the lyrical beauty, gentle colors and soft sunlight of the Blue Ridge Mountains with an impressionist’s use of color, light, and space. He renders landscapes through an almost infinite number of abstract brushstrokes and subtle color variations, each building on the other to evoke moods of stillness and serenity. Don Black, on the other hand, reduces the colors and shapes found in nature to their abstract simplicity. His flowing watercolor and acrylic abstract paintings have hints of their landscape origins behind their masterful balance of color, shapes and energy.
A graduate of the University of Virginia and resident of Stephens Cky, William H. Whiting is one of the area’s most renowned and successful artists. His painting career began at UVA and the American School in Vienna, Austria. However, with over thirty
