Drought—
it’s serious
Farmers and homeowners are concerned
Federal emergency loan assistance will be made
available to farmers in over 20 contiguous localities
as a result of a federal drought disaster and even though Rappahannock hasn’t hit that list yet, we are dry.
Sperryville Weather Watcher Dennis B. Wingfield said on Monday, “we are down seven inches.” So far for the month of August with the exception of Monday afternoon’s shower we had only received .12 of an inch for the month. Mr. Wingfield added that’s like needing $7 worth and getting 12 cents worth.
For the month of July we received 3.06 inches of rainfall, however, out of 31 days in July—19 of those days were 90 degrees or higher. So far for August out dfl2 days—seven have been 90 degrees or higher.
Everyone should be conserving water and be extremely careful. Mr. Wingfield added we could have a solid week of rain (of course, depending upon the amount) and we would still not be where we need to be in terms of adequate rainfall. All too often we are all guilty of taking for granted the luxuries provided to us until the situation gets serious. Lets do our part in conserving water now.

So it’s nice to observe what beautiful summer landscape the folks at VDOT are giving us now, with the Waves of wildflowers along our roadsides. Along US $11 outside the Tbwn of Washington, the Rappahannock Garden Club should also receive credit ror the lily display. Well done!
