The most recent U.S. Census lists 105 families of the 2,024 families living in the county, as being at or below the poverty level, says county administrator John McCarthy.
Of the families that are in need, one-fourth are single mothers, another fourth are the elderly, another fourth are couples with more than one child, and the remainder are foster care children, according to Mrs. Davis.
Right now, says Mrs. Davis, the elderly under her care need hats and scarves and gloves. Monetary donations are always good, she says, if for instance someone needs kerosene for a stove.
“Anybody who has firewood that would like to donate it, we can hook them up with the people that need it. We always have a need for wood at this time of year,” Mrs. Davis says, adding that they can call Judy Atkins or her at social services at 675-3313.
