“There’s some mixed solace there,” Erickson said.
To try and reduce the number of drunk driving crashes in the region, WRAP is trying to increase public awareness and supports increased police enforcement, increased sanctions for higher-risk drivers and increased funding for prevention and enforcement programs.
According to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, sobriety checkpoints are a particularly useful method of enforcement. Because they are very visible, they may act as a deterrent, as well as catching offenders.
