The School Board concluded its arduous task and selected Dr. Robert Chappell as the new Superintendent of Rappahannock County Public Schools. The climax of more than four months of work was a unanimous vote to approve Dr. Chappell, and a contract signing ceremony with School Board Chairman Wesley Mills. Dr. Chappell was welcomed by the Rappahannock community with a standing ovation after the brief ceremony.
Dr. Chappell is currently the Superintendent of Page County Public Schools and is no stranger to Rappahannock, having served as its Assistant Superintendent from 1987 to 1994 and as the Principal of ‘Rappahannock County High School from 1982 to 1987. He will assume the office of Superintendent on July 1, 2003.
In his remarks, Dr. Chappell told of the offer of a contract extension made to him by the Page County School Board the evening before, and of his declination of that offer. “My heart is in Rappahannock County” he said, and he thanked our School Board for their trust and expressed his excitement about working here. Much of that excitement, he explained, is about the opportunity to “work with the most important people-the young people of Rappahannock County”
Dr. Chappell introduced Kathryn, his wife of thirty-five years and, in conclusion, said that he would spend the next six months keenly anticipating the opportunity to help continue the improvement of Rappahannock County Public Schools.
