Alcohol- and drug-related crashes in the region increased for the fourth consecutive year in 2001 and fatalities increased for the third consecutive year.
In its annual publication, “How Safe are Our Roads? A Data Report on the Impact of Drunk Driving on Highway Safety in the Washington Metropolitan Region,” the Washington Regional Alcohol Program (WRAP) reported a 36-percent increase in fatal drunk-driving crashes from 1998 to 2001 and a 20-percent increase in all alcoholand drug-related crashes from 1997 to 2001.
The organization also noted a 50-percent decrease in driving under the influ. ence and driving while intoxicated arrests over the past decade.
“It’s continuing bad news,” said Kurt Erickson, president and CEO of WRAP. “This is not a phenomenon that’s new here.”
David Anderson and Noel Goldberg of George Mason University’s Center for the Advancement of Public Health prepared the study for the McLean-based alcohol education group.
