Ms. LaPre does recommend some natural remedies that gardeners can use to supplement the balance of nature. She would begin by hand turning over the soil one time only, and adding sand, compost, and peat moss.
Those additions allow the microbes to flourish. If fertilizers are necessary, liquid kelp, seaweed, bone meal, or fish emulsion are good choices.
She also uses mulch to conserve moisture. Straw is best for vegetables and flowers, but the straw cam be covered with other materials for appearance’s sake in a perennial garden. The garden should be created to stand on its own.
