anniversary with a record breaking 22,648 acres of privately-owned land placed under easement by 154 donors in nine counties of Virginia’s Northern Piedmont region.
John Rice, land conservation officer for Rappahannock County, hopes that this year will be even better, urging landowners who wish to put an easement on their land before the end of this fiscal year to begin the process immediately.
In 1972 Irwin was the first in the county to put his land under protection. Since then his easements have grown to a total of 115 acres with 31 approved for this year.
Irwin hopes that others will consider putting their land under easement as well, saying there are “lots of good reasons to preserve.”
