There are several small rapids and great places to stop and picnic or just swim. This river has more large rapids than any small stream in the Northern Virginia area. Its difficulty rating is Class 2-4 with an average gradient of 34 feet per mile.

Based on a survey of whitewater rivers, completed in 1992 by 29 Blue Ridge Voyageurs Canoe Club Members with more than 10 years of experience, the Covington River ranked 37 of 68 by level of difficulty. The Thornton River ranked 58. Remember, river difficulty varies dramatically under extreme conditions.
