By far the largest household group is comprised of married couples without young children (38.6 percent of all households). Other family groups without young children comprise 5.9 percent.
Finally, 15.5 percent of all households contain people aged less than 65 years who live alone and 4.7 percent of households contain “unrelated” people. The latter could, of course, be partially composed of couples who sire not married.
The 2000 census showed that there were 6,983 people in the county and 2,788 households. Thus, the average household size is 2.50 persons.
This is smaller than Fauquier (2.75), Culpeper (2.68), Madison (2.60), and Warren (2.57) counties, but is slightly larger than Page county (2.46).
Compared to these surrounding counties, Rappahannock County has the lowest proportion of family households with children aged less than 18 years (27.5 percent).
