The battle rages on, as creationists and evolutionists vie for the spotlight in classrooms across the country.
In an attempt to end what he considers evolution’s domination over the classroom, Jeff Smith, senior pastor of Young Memorial Baptist Church, is organizing a 400-mile, threeweek horseback ride from Concord, N.C. to Washington, D.C. He hopes that the result of this project will be academic freedom in the classroom.
“The ‘Darwin Only policy on evolution education is narrow and needs revision,” said Smith. “In science classes across this country, evolution has a near ‘exclusive’ status when discussing how human beings were created.
“That inhibits education,” he continued. “Intelligent design or creation is a legitimate scientific view that can be taught outside the realm of religion. There is hard evidence to support its claims,” he said.
