According to the 2000 U. S. Census, there were 963 residents of the county who were age 65 or older. Of these, 219 lived alone (22.8 percent), almost one in four older persons.

Older persons who live alone should be of concern because at older ages, health and physical problems are not uncommon. However, Rappahannock County has a strong tradition of friends, family and neighbors helping each other in times of need.

There is also a program based in the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Office whereby older persons can be contacted each morning to determine
