Social Services referred her to a family guidance program where she found out about a support group for battered women which SAFE leads in Orange. A year later she left for the shelter in Culpeper.
“I’d just had enough. I woke up one morning and said This is it.’ It’s a hard decision but it’s a decision I had to make,” she said.
Dinah is not alone. A national survey of women between 18 and 65 years of age showed that in 1997, 24 percent had suffered some form of domestic violence.
The state level is no better. In 2000, 129 deaths were attributed to family violence.
Those who think this problem does not reach the peaceful borders of Rappahannock County are wrong. Of the 698 women SAFE served last year, through counseling, support groups and shelter, 20 were from Rappahannock.
Newly appointed SAFE Board Member, Beverly Leathers, feels that many more women exist in Rappahannock who could benefit from these resources, but simply do not know about them.
