John Joseph Dwyer, 84, a criminal trial attorney in D.C. for more than 30 years, would rather be on his tractor bushhogging his 1,000 acres on Black Rock Farm in Flint Hill than doing most anything else.
He loved his land and the vistas so much that he donated close to 1,000 acres in easement because, as his wife, Sheila said, "he wanted the landscape to stay the same . . . the vistas to stay the same."
A long time ago, he took a picture of the views from his farm, which stretches from Route 522 over to Fodderstack Road and promised then he would do everything to keep it that way, she said.
"He wanted to die here," Mrs. Dwyer said.
On Sunday morning at 10 o'clock, while out bushhogging the farm he purchased more than 40 years ago, he accidentally went off the edge of a rock wall and the tractor rolled over on him, according to fire and rescue officials at the scene.
Flint Hill, Washington and Chester Gap fire and rescue teams responded to the scene after a passing motorist called 911, officials said.
Dwyer was still alive and talking, said eyewitnesses, and was taken by helicopter to INOVA Fairfax Hospital. He died from injuries that afternoon.
This Irish Catholic from Boston, a World War II veteran, who smoked a cigar for years, was fondly remembered by neighbors and friends, some of whom called him 'J. J."
"What a character," said Bubby Settle from his garage in Flint Hill. "For me, I considered him a good friend.
"I did a lot of work for him over the years, repairing his tractor, his pickup truck. His tractor was his favorite thing."
Sometimes Dwyer would get his equipment stuck in the pond, and Settle said, "we'd have to pull him out. He always was enjoying his equipment and his land. And I enjoyed the time I spent with him."
