home to a total of 158 adults and children. Even this could not fill all the need that existed in the area though, and 86 additional requests for shelter had to go unfilled.

Transitional housing also exists for women once they are ready to move out on their own.

All of these services are free, except for the transitional apartments which are rented at reduced rates.

“This is a life saver for a lot of women who might end up dead,” said Dinah, “I would have.”

Her advice to other women at the shelter is, “Get out.”

She has been at the shelter since April, and said her experience with SAFE has been very positive.

“The people that run the shelter, they are there for you no matter what the situation and they help you. It’s hard to explain about the women here, they are a unique group of women. You’re used to people bringing you down but they’re always saying ‘Good job’ and ‘I knew you could do it’ things I guess we all need to hear right now.”
