Best candidate
As we come down to the wire in the race for
Rappahannock County sheriff, what matters
most is not whether a candidate wears a gold chain around his neck like challenger Steve Butler or is perceived by some as arrogant and brusque like incumbent Larry Sherertz. Both these "issues" have been voiced informally by voters who say they won't vote for them because of these traits.
What matters most to us in the context of representing the public and its right to know, is being able to obtain information from the Sheriffs Department when we learn about a crime. Time and again over these past few years, we have been unable to receive the information from the Sheriff s Department we feel is necessary to provide an accurate picture of a specific crime and the overall picture of it in our county.
When we seek this information, the sheriff will tell us the information on the report provided by a deputy is either unreadable, incomplete or not available yet. Speaking of unavailability, virtually every time we have called after 3 or 3:30 p.m. we are told by the dispatcher the sheriff has left for the day.
For us to do our job informing the public, we need a Sheriff who will be responsive to the public’s right to know.
We feel it is time for a change. Steve Butler has the dedication and law enforcement background to do the job. He is being supported by some of the law enforcement people we respect most. In their opinion, he is the best candidate. We agree.
