I feel my meaning did not come through in the report on my comments at the forum for School Board candidates on testing and the No Child Left Behind Act. Here is what I in fact said:
“We need to learn to somehow take these testing requirements in stride.
“We have allowed our schools to be held hostage to SOL tests and instruction has suffered. The No Child Left> Behind law promises to hit us even worse. I believe there are schools that have managed to endure and do well on these tests without ‘stressing out.’ We need to do so also
“While many of those who voted for the No Child Left Behind Act did so because they want to improve public education, the program is being implemented as a giant game of Gotcha’ designed ultimately to justify taking money from public schools and giving it to private schools in the form of vouchers. Unlike public schools, private schools don’t have to educate all kids, and their students are not subject to these tests.
