Parents can do many things to ensure that their child enjoys a safe Halloween, even if that child is a teen-ager. Here are some sight-saving tips from Prevent Blindness Virginia:

• Always visit a licensed eye care professional to be fitted for cosmetic contact lenses.

• Never buy contact lenses without a prescription.

• Always clean and disinfect contact lenses according to instructions.

• Use water-soluble cosmetics or those labeled safe for use with contact lenses. Do not apply skin creams or moisturizers close to the eyes.

• Never wear opaque lenses if there are any problems with night vision.

• Never share or trade contact lenses with anyone.

• Be vigilant about an older child’s appearance before letting them leave the house. If they are wearing cosmetic contacts, ask where they got them.

• Use makeup in place of masks. Wear hypoallergenic makeup. Have an adult apply the makeup, and remove it with cold cream instead of soap.

Other tips to avoid an ER trip include avoiding costumes that block vision, and avoiding props like swords or wands that may injure eyes.
