A final question put to the sheriff concerned his goals for the next four years, if he is reelected. He listed the following:

• Competitive salaries and benefits for his deputies;

• Enhanced community policing where deputies are empowered to hold community meetings to solve their problems;

• “Homeland Security” issues where Rappahannock County has vulnerabilities, all requiring new training and equipment to cope with potential emergencies;

• Accreditation for the Sheriff’s Department, a process that takes a year to complete by the Virginia Law Enforcement Accreditation Coalition;

• Continued success in obtaining grant funds for the Rappahannock Sheriff’s Department.
