When Gannon asked candidates what was the most significant problem facing the county and how each would solve it, most candidates said that school funding was the most significant problem.
Anderson said that the composite index, used to determine state school funding for counties, provided only 30 percent of Rappahannock County's needs, but up to 70 percent elsewhere, but it would be politically difficult to change. Bear suggested cutting back on the number of school administrators.
Frazier said that funding for fire and rescue was the county's most significant problem and that fire and rescue people may have to be paid. He said that Rappahannock is the only county in the state with unpaid volunteers.
Should property tax increases be limited to five percent a year, Gannon asked.
