Republican governor. Before that in 1966 after veteran Democrat Howard Smith was defeated in a primary, Republican Bill Scott won election to the House.
In 1970 U.S.Sen. Harry F. Byrd Jr. shocked Virginians by turning independent in his bid for re-election. He won easily.
In 1972 Bill Scott beat incumbent Democratic U.S.Senator Bill Spong. At the same time Virginia voters went overwhelming for the re-election of President Richard Nixon over Democratic nominee George McGovern.
Republicans won three consecutive gubernatorial races as the state Democratic Party apparatus was taken over by liberals. But in the early 1980s with the election of Democrat Charles S. Robb as governor the Democrat party shifted somewhat to the center in Virginia
But by then a firm two party system had been established in Virginia, a trend accelerated by the steady left
