Similar budget and crime statistics in the surrounding three counties were also examined from 1999 to 2004 to see how Rappahannock compared to local law enforcement costs elsewhere. In Fauquier County, during the period that our per capita costs for local law enforcement went from $124.87 to $172.12 per person, Fauquier’s went from $92.36 to $117.70; Culpeper’s went from $81.62 to $143.07 and Madison’s went from $56.49 to $76.73.
In Culpeper County, from 1999 to 2002, the cost per crime solved went from $1,160 to $2,468; Fauquier went from $2,819 to $3,218; Madison went from $3,150 to $4,347 while Rappahannock’s cost per crime solved leapt from $5,057 to $12,125.
However you slice it, the costs of operation of the Rappahannock County Sheriff’s Department is much higher on a per capita basis and on a dollars per crime solved basis than any of the three surrounding counties— more than triple what it costs per arrest in Fauquier and Culpeper, and more than two and a half times the cost per crime solved in Madison.
