As part of National Fire Prevention Week, members of two volunteer fire departments visited area children to educate them on fire and emergency procedures.
Last Thursday, the Washington Volunteer Fire Department paid its annual visit to children at the Child Care and Learning Center.
On Friday, members of Flint Hill’s Volunteer Fire and Rescue Squad visited preschool through fourth grade children at Wakefield Country Day School.
A fire truck and ambulance were on hand at each event, and Washington and Flint Hill squad members demonstrated the vehicles’ capabilities and explained the different pieces of equipment.
All children had the chance to climb inside a fire truck, don a fireman’s uniform, and pretend to be a patient in the back of an ambulance.
The children learned that everyone has a role in fire safety.
Officials urge residents to make sure they have working smoke alarms on all levels of their homes and in all sleeping areas. They should be tested once a month to make sure they are working and batteries should be replaced once a year.
