Maunce and Jane Herndon have a hornets nest on the bathroom window of their Sperryville home. Twenty-three years ago, at their home in Alexandria, hornets built a nest on a picture window there. The Herndons enjoy watching the hornets so much that they hope they don’t wait another 23 years before visiting again.
The house and vineyard at Farfelu will be open for the House Tour this weekend. Chuck Raney, an airline pilot now retired, and his family came to apple country of Rappahannock and planted a few grape vines in 1967. At first, the idea of a vineyard in the middle of apple country seemed farfetched. Determination won out, however, and Farfelu became Virginia’s first licensed winery.
The Board of Supervisors voted 4 to 0 with Chairman Hubert Gilkey abstaining to rezone Werner Krebser’s 4.1-acre Flint Hill Square development from village residential to village commercial. Dr. Krebser asked for the rezoning to expand the shopping center to build more space for Blueridge Technologies.
