They poke up in tiny clusters like a nest of baby birds begging for food with their little petals gaping open.

They became mine on film.

Again, nearly missing the roof of my boot, was a clump of snake plantain its veiny leaves resembling the scales of a snake fortunately without the coil and hiss.

The forest is a primeval place for me with nature clearly in command and wild in its beauty.

Yet there is a soothing rhythm to its endless walls of green doors, each opening into another room of perhaps jagged outcroppings or tangled blackberries, or the smell of a spice bush or the remnants of a once grand chestnut, now fallen.

Nearly strangled by the forest, we spied a few traces of man’s presence, like a towering stone chimney that once had provided a warm fire for what was undoubtedly a comfortable forest retreat or another pile of stones marking what was left of another shelter.

These are bits of history - all that is left to remind us that parts of the Shenandoah once housed families now long gone.

Purported to have been part of a barrel making operation, a rusty piece of metal still stands guard in marked contrast to its limey green surroundings.

They appeared very fresh - these signature depressions in the soft mud.

Whenever he or she was last there, this bear was large. There were fresh droppings as well and it was immediately recognizable that this bear had feasted on some fresh com kernels.
