Smith has been a professional carpenter since 1990, and for the last several years has carried a Class B contractor’s license.
Smith moved to Maine to enroll in the Landing School of Boat Building and Design in Arundel, Maine three years ago. There he learned traditional and contemporary boat building techniques. Smith is also certified by the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC) to work on diesel boat engines, marine electrical systems. So if you have a boat that needs some specialized work, give him a call. Like Kevin Costner, Smith is a devotee of the “build it and they will come” philosophy.
The first boat Smith is making at Blue Ridge Boatworks, his new local company will be an Acorn Skiff, a traditional Maine sailing and rowing vessel. This prototype will be done using contemporary materials with traditional techniques and design.
The hull, Smith explains, will be of “lap straight construction.” That is, the hull is made from overlapping bent planks, giving the familiar ridged appearance to the exterior of the hull. Traditionally, a hull of this sort would be made by steaming planks of wood and bending them over a frame.
