grass 4-goal Northern Virginia Polo League out of the Seagers’ Chetwood Park estate in The Plains. Chetwood will be hosting the USPA 4-goal Amateur Cup later in July. Noguerra previously ran the polo school at Willow Run for the last four years and taught an average of seventy neophytes a season. Of these, he estimates, twenty actually go on to play in the local leagues. “I’ve taught a lot of kids and they usually disappear from polo when they start going to college,” he remarked.
At a grass scrimmage at Chetwood last Wednesday afternoon, two of his current crop, Caroline Chewning, 17, of Upperville, and Ashley Van Metre, 14, of Middleburg, were clearly thrilled to be practicing with highlyrated professionals. Their doting mothers were fieldside, cheering them on and hotwalking their horses. “My mom’s been pretty supportive. Sometimes she complains she has to drive me out when she has so many things to do, but she does it anyway. So far, she hasn’t complained about the expense,” Van Metre said.
