Polo Notes
The word “polo” originated from the Tibetan word “pulu", meaning ball. The British discovered the game in India and introduced it to the western world. The ball utilized for field play, which used to be made of willow root, is now made of hard plastic. The arena ball is inflated and is sized like a miniature soccer ball. A polo mallet, or “stick,” measures anywhere from 49 to 54 inches, depending on the height of your mount, and has a rattan (not cane, not bamboo) shaft and a hardwood head. There are a couple of players using graphite shafts but most prefer the traditional feel of rattan (a sturdy vine harvested from the jungles of Southeast Asia). The polo pony is usually horse sized, anywhere from 14.3 to 16 hands, depending on the size, weight and preference of the rider. Thoroughbreds, Argentine criollos or their crosses are preferred. Most players also favor mares over geldings. Average price for a sevenyear old, “made” pony for medium-goal play is around $15,000. You’ll need anywhere from two to eight mounts according to which format, and level, you play. All players shake hands after a match, particularly if it was a rough and hard-fought.
