here, the sport’s growth in the area has been unprecedented. Since its founding by Peter Arundel in 1994, GMPC in The Plains has emerged as the premier facility for stadium (also called arena) polo in the country. It has hosted three successive US Open championships and several international friendlies.
Stadium polo differs from the traditional grass game in that it is played three to a side, instead of the four that grass requires, and is played in a high-sided wooden enclosure measuring a minimum of 150 feet by 300 feet in area. Grass polo is played on fields at least 150 yards wide by 300 yards long — roughly more than ten acres. Up until the Fifties, both versions were considered prime training for cavalry troopers.
