James Edward Clark invented various types of steel. At that time, African Americans were not allowed to obtain patents. The steel executives gave the family a three story, five-bedroom house on Garfield Hill as payment for his inventions.
He delighted his two daughters, Elizabeth and Minnie Delila by crafting superb miniature toys made of steel. The perfectly designed horses and tools are about the size of a little finger. The miniature toys were passed on to Minnie’s grandchildren, Gail and Milton Swan Jr. of Los Angeles.
James Edward Clark’s grandson and namesake was James Edward Swan of Pittsburgh Pennsylvania. James’ Swan carried on the family tradition of craftsmanship. He graduated
