drew, whom would the insurgency fight? Yes, there could be a different kind of civil, war over the- partition of power. But isn’t there one now? The solution to the Finger Trap is to do the intuitively opposite: relax the strain.
While there is hatred of the US, there is possibly even more growing toward the insurgents, viewed by many Iraqis as unlslamic, as defiling their religions by their tactics, and if foreigners, as meddlers. The foreign fighters already seem to be making themselves unpopular because of the “collateral damage” caused by their attacks on US and Iraqi security forces, civilian employees of the US and its dependency government. But the presence of Americans in a Muslim country, killing Muslims, fuels Muslim solidarity and the internationalist jihad side of the insurgency. Our presence in Iraq fuels a nationalist, Iraqi resistance.
Let us be wise enough to realize we can’t and shouldn’t try to remake Iraq in our own image. Let Iraqis decide their own future, including how to use American strength and how to eradicate their own insurgency The administration might meditate on what was once said of Bill Gates: the reason he is still at the head of his company, unlike most start up entrepreneurs, is he understood that to keep power he had to give up power.
